Cultural Tour Sri Lanka: 13 Nights / 14 Days

Sri Lanka is a multi-ethnic country with a rich cultural history dating back thousands of years. These cultural experiences range from elaborate art and architecture to spectacular festivals, and a number of impressive UNESCO World Heritage sites in addition to other attractions, less popular but as impressive.

On this tour, you will get the opportunity to explore the remnants of ancient cities and majestic old temples in addition to bits and pieces of evidence left behind more recently, by Dutch, Portuguese and British Colonizers. To go along with the cultural landmarks, you will also have the opportunity to view local wildlife and experience the warmth and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people while getting an insight into our day to day lives and traditions.

Arrival --> Colombo --> Anuradhapura --> Jaffna --> Aukana --> Dambulla -->Sigiriya --> Minneriya NP --> Polonnaruwa --> Kandy -->Lunuganga --> Galle --> Unawatuna --> Departure

 

DAY 1 

  • Welcome on arrival and transfer to the capital, Colombo.
  • Spend the day relaxing/exploring the neighborhood.
  • Overnight at a boutique hotel in the heart of Colombo.

Airport-Colombo: 45 mins

 

DAY 2 

  • Spend the day sightseeing around Colombo, visiting landmarks with religious, historic and cultural value.
  • In the evening, learn to prepare a traditional Sri Lankan meal, followed by dinner.
  • Overnight at a boutique hotel in the heart of Colombo.

 

DAY 3  

  • Get an early start and travel to Anuradhapura, the first Kingdom of Ancient Sri Lanka.
  • Spend the rest of the day exploring this UNESCO World Heritage city.
  • Overnight at a guest house in Anuradhapura.

Colombo-Anuradhapura: 4-5 hours

 

DAY 4

  • After breakfast, board the morning train to Jaffna through the heart of Sri Lanka’s dry zone shrub jungles, civil war ruins and local towns and villages.
  • Spend the afternoon relaxing/exploring the neighborhood.
  • Overnight at a boutique hotel in Jaffna town.

Anuradhapura-Jaffna: 2 ½ hours (train)

 

DAY 5

  • Spend the day exploring the Jaffna peninsula with a local guide. Experience the unique flavors and cultures of this Hindu and Christian majority city.
  • Overnight at a boutique hotel in Jaffna town.

DAY 6

  • Spend the day exploring the almost uninhabited string of islands off the Jaffna peninsula. 
  • Overnight at a boutique hotel in Jaffna town.

 

DAY 7

  • Catch the morning train back to Anuradhapura.
  • Have lunch and transfer by car to visit the standing Buddha statue at Aukana.
  • Proceed to Dambulla to visit the ancient Cave Temple, a UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Overnight at a hotel in Dambulla/Sigiriya.  

Jaffna-Anuradhapura: 4 hours (train) / Anuradhapura-Aukana: 1 hour / Aukana-Dambulla: 1 hour

 

DAY 8 

  • Climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the morning.
  • Afternoon safari at nearby Minneriya National Park, to see herds of wild elephants.
  • Overnight at a hotel in Dambulla/Sigiriya.

Dambulla-Minneriya: 40 mins

 

DAY 9 

  • Spend the morning relaxing at the hotel.
  • In the afternoon travel to Polonnaruwa, another UNESCO World heritage, and explore it on bicycles.
  • Return to hotel in Dambulla/Sigiriya for the night. 

Dambulla-Polonnaruwa: 1 hour

 

DAY 10 

  • After breakfast travel to the hill capital and last Kingdom of ancient Sri Lanka, Kandy.
  • Spend the rest of the day exploring the city. Experience traditional Kandyan culture and the omnipresent influence of the colonial era.
  • Early evening visit to the sacred Temple of the Tooth, one of the world’s most important Buddhist shrines.
  • Overnight at a colonial era hotel.

Dambulla-Kandy: 3 hours

 

DAY 11 

  • In the morning travel to Lunuganga Estate in Bentota, the country home of the late Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most influential architect.
  • Spend the rest of the day relaxing on the estate.
  • Overnight at Lunuganga Estate.

Kandy-Lunuganga: 4-5 hours

 

DAY 12 

  • After a late breakfast, travel to the historic Galle Fort City and spend the day exploring the Fort with a local guide.
  • Overnight at a boutique hotel inside the Galle Fort. 

Bentota-Galle: 1 ½ hours

 

DAY 13 

  • Spend the day exploring the fort. If inclined visit nearby Unawatuna for some beach time.
  • Overnight at a boutique hotel inside the Galle Fort. 

 

DAY 14

  • Transfer to the airport for your flight back home.

Galle-Airport: 2-3 hours
